The Spring Yard — Changhui Hu Solo Exhibition

Changhui Hu was born in 1979 in Laiyang, Shandong Province. He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the Shandong University of Arts and now lives and works in Beijing. His practice turns on a single question: how art might handle truth. Where "innovation" holds little interest for him, "authenticity" does; his is a way of working grounded in direct personal experience, unbound by inherited methodology, in which oil paint, ink and life drawing are simply instruments in service of expression. He has painted animals set against industrial ruins, building surreal, quietly ironic compositions, and has spent years painting ordinary plants (gourds, pumpkins, magnolia) treating observation itself as method. More recently he has brought the spatial sense and formal logic of Western painting into his ink work, producing images that are richly coloured, clearly structured and still visibly made by hand.

The Spring Yard is Changhui Hu's solo exhibition at Baisha Spring Art Centre, presenting twenty two large and medium format works centred on courtyards, plants and landscape, subjects that recur throughout his recent practice. The exhibition does not impose a separate spatial language on the venue. It works directly with the existing Chinese courtyard layout and timber lattice walls, so the paintings sit within the building's own architectural logic and the viewing route unfolds naturally, without contrived narrative sequencing. Staged beside West Lake, the show also sets up a quiet correspondence: a real garden setting alongside the garden landscapes that Hu's paintings repeatedly depict and reconstruct.
